1. "Alley Farming"

For the bushrows Gliricidia (legume) is planted by stems

Traditional planting on heaps

In the past fallows took up to twenty years. In that way the soil could get back its fertility

The overpopulation causes a shortage of land. Therefore fallows had to be reduced to two or three years. Bush burning also diminuishes the fertility of soil

Establishement of "Alley Farming" with traditional means (hoes)

Gliricidia is fast growing

"Alley Farming" prevents erosion and the soil is gradually enriched with biomass

The bushes have to be pruned regularly
